I love Jurassic Park. It represents the absolute best of what Steven Spielberg has to offer, and is arguably his last truly great adventure film. The sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, on the other hand, is a film seemingly constructed on a base of self loathing; a dark, slightly exploitative work that takes the easy way out a little too often. Whereas the original film understood our child-like fascination with dinosaurs, the sequel insisted on impressing its audience with extended effects sequences and pandering humor, leaving little room for the awe and terror that made the first one a masterpiece in blockbuster cinema. Jurassic Park III, which was directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) was more tonally consistent with the first film than The Lost World, but was ultimately more than a little half baked as a complete work, and again left much to be desired.
This brings us to Jurassic Park 4, which is currently slated for a summer 2015 release date. Directed by newcomer Colin Trevorrow, the film will evidently bring audiences back to the shores of Isla Nublar, the island from the first film. To prove to audiences that this film is a reality, Universal Studios have released a teaser poster for the movie, using Jeff Goldblum’s famous line from the first movie as a tag line. Having recently sat through the glorious 3D re-release of the original Jurassic Park, I’m definitely excited to see more dinosaur action on the big screen. Unfortunately, the current catalog of sequels that have come before it have me feeling a little apprehensive about letting my guard down and feeling excited for a new adventure. Let’s hope Trevorrow brings the goods.(picture source: http://static03.mediaite.com/themarysue/uploads/2013/07/jurassic_park_4_teaser_poster.jpg)
